It has been a long time since I posted anything. I spent much of last month either on business trips or in bed sick. When I was not involved with either of those, I was dealing with the crisis flavor of the day in my work. So, let’s just say that I am glad January is over.
Today they play the Super Bowl: not that I care much. I stopped keeping track of the No Fun League (aka NFL) years ago as my church involvement kept me busy on Sundays. I haven’t missed it much living overseas, but for the past few years getting together with other guys to watch a video tape of the game after the fact has been a good time, although I really can’t remember who played or even who wins from one year to another. However, if you must watch the game, this blog by C.J. Mahaney has some good advice.
A few days ago I ran across these words at Irish Calvinist, a blog that I often read:
Some folks see Jesus as a means to an end; he can help you in life, improve your broken marriage, inject some much needed morality, provide a new set of friends, give hope, make you feel better, and perhaps even give you a purpose statement to enjoy your best life now. So in this case we have Jesus as the salvation ferry that brings the sinner to enjoy the island of amusements and self-fullment. Jesus is a means to bring about a seriously selfish, and dare I say, idolatrous end.
On the other hand, some come to Jesus not as a means to an end but as the end itself. Jesus is not a vehicle to anything other than the enjoyment of his own perfection. We don’t come to Jesus as a connecting flight to our own exaltation but rather the final destination in the unmitigated divine exaltation. It is that simple.
I recommend that you go read the rest of the post by clicking on the link above. My other recommendation is that you embrace Jesus as the greatest end and have a real Super Sunday.
Hopefully, I will be able to post more often in the coming weeks.
